"My staff (at Sioux Trail Elementary) have been sharing about Headway's training sessions. Teachers come back from the trainings excited to try new strategies and they have new understanding regarding mental health issues. This is making a difference in their classrooms and helping them relate to students when they are struggling."

-Shannon McParland, Principal, Sioux Trail Elementary

Assessment and Testing

Psychological testing uses a broad array of assessments to understand a person’s strengths as well as clarify the source of psychological symptoms. Results of testing are used to create recommendations that empower our clients to live an emotionally healthy life. We also conduct re-evaluations to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to recommended action plans. At Headway, we provide psychological testing services to children, adolescents, adults, and families.

What is the process like?

Our Intake office will help set up your appointment. They will ask for some basic information and schedule an initial appointment with one of our licensed mental health professionals. The assessment is usually done over the course of three appointments. The first appointment is a one-hour structured interview, which informs the testing process -- the results help us tailor the next appointment’s tests to your specific needs. The next appointment is a three- to four-hour testing session. Four weeks after the testing session, when the results of the testing have been organized, there is a feedback appointment to review the results and recommendations with you. You will receive a final evaluation report which includes detailed treatment and intervention recommendations.

Types of Evaluations

General Psychological Evaluations

Individually tailored assessments are offered to gain an understanding of cognitive, socio-emotional, behavioral, and personality characteristics. Concerns may include:

  • Cognitive/Adaptive Testing

  • Autism spectrum disorder (Screening only)

  • Personality functioning

  • Mood disorders such as bipolar disorder and depression

  • Anxiety/Obsessive-compulsive disorder

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

  • Reactive attachment disorder

  • Oppositional defiant disorder

  • Psychotic disorders

  • Learning problems/Academic struggles

Parenting Assessments

This comprehensive evaluation is intended to provide information about a parent’s mental health, strengths, and areas of growth in relationship-building, parent-child interactions, and appropriate discipline. It consists of parent interviews as well as parent-child interaction observations.

Psychosexual Assessments

We offer this service for clients under the age of 18. Our clients who receive this service are often referred by their County or Court for reasons like child custody, child protection, and/or pre-sentence investigations. We use this evaluation to determine risk and protective factors and identify appropriate treatment options and compliance with treatment. As part of the evaluation process, testing involves collecting collateral legal/background information, conducting psychological testing, and administering instruments to assess risk for re-occurring inappropriate sexual behaviors.

Headway accepts all major insurance companies as well as MA for clients seeking testing services.
