"My staff (at Sioux Trail Elementary) have been sharing about Headway's training sessions. Teachers come back from the trainings excited to try new strategies and they have new understanding regarding mental health issues. This is making a difference in their classrooms and helping them relate to students when they are struggling."

Carissa has worked in the human services field since 2006 and joined Headway in August, 2016.  As a school-based therapist, she has the unique opportunity to work directly with adolescents in a school and be present with them. They meet with her to discuss the many different kinds of situations that they encounter.  She supports her clients in learning skills that can help them navigate their lives and gain positive emotional health and wellness.  She specializes in strength-based, humanistic, and experiential therapeutic approaches.  "Everyone has a story and it's a real honor to hear the stories of students and families.  I work with them so that when they look back on things, they realize they have experienced more comedy than tragedy, more hope than despair, and ultimately, that they have crafted a life that they can look back on and be proud of."

Carissa has a great number of interests and hobbies outside of work. Some of them include walking, dancing, swimming, watching movies, and traveling.  She travels fairly often, as she has family in Mexico, but also greatly enjoyed a trip to explore Southeast Asia in 2016.
